Villa Brancoli is an ideal base for exploring northern Tuscany. The villa is located in the Brancoleria, a quiet agricultural area with half a dozen hamlets and Romanesque churches scattered throughout. At five minutes walking from the villa is the Pieve of San Giorgio di Brancoli, a beautiful eleventh-century Romanesque church. Gignano, a medieval hamlet with a main street too narrow for cars, is just beyond the Pieve. A more substantial hike is to the Croce di Brancoli from where you can see the Mediterranean Sea.

Short and Half-Day Destinations

The area immediately around Villa Brancoli is rich in destinations.

At some ten minutes driving from the villa is Ponte a Moriano, on the road to Lucca, with a pharmacy, a post office, a bank and an excellent supermarket. Ponte has some first-rate restaurants. (According to the New York Times, the Lucchesia has some of the finest cuisine in all of Tuscany.)

At some 20 minutes from the villa, at Borgo a Mozzano, is the Ponte del Diavolo (“Devil’s Bridge”) over the Serchio. Its huge central span constitutes a feat of medieval engineering.

Lucca is at 25 minutes driving from the villa. We could not do justice to this beautiful city if we tried to describe it here in a few lines! For more information please visit www.comune.lucca.it or www.knowital.com and click on “Lucca.”

The countryside around Lucca is famous for its elegant villas (most of them with well-kept grounds), many of which are open to the public.
